The City's fourth Suwanee SculpTour exhibit offers more than ever – more art pieces, more local artists, and the largest sculpture yet to be included in Suwanee's public art encounter in and around Town Center Park. The 17 public art pieces in the 2015-17 Suwanee SculpTour, arranged along an approximately one-mile walking tour, will be on exhibit through March 2017.

Be sure to vote for your favorite SculpTour art piece. At the end of the exhibit, providing that funds are available, the City of Suwanee will add at least one SculpTour piece to its permanent art collection.

Love Hurts by Benson Sculpture/Aaron Benson

The message of Love Hurts is that when we choose to love, we can sometimes get hurt. This piece's title is taken from the 1970s rock band Nazareth's song of the same name. Husband and wife Aaron Lee and Betty Jane Benson, of Jackson, Tennessee, are the talent behind Benson Sculpture, LLC. They both have master of fine arts degrees in ceramics/sculpture from the University of Tennessee and have created public works of art for 30 years. Their team now includes their three grown children, who regularly help out with the family business. The Bensons recently developed a partnership with Habitat for Humanity International through which materials from some of their wood sculptures can be recycled and used to build homes for low-income families.

Sunflower Gate by Andrew T. Crawford

Well-known for his creation of functional objects and ornamental ironworks, Andrew Crawford may be best known for his unique ornamental gates, such as this one. Andrew Crawford's grandmother, along with his parents, encouraged and fostered his youthful artistic endeavors, allowing him to set up a home workshop. Crawford attended the Rhode Island School of Design, where he studied sculpture. After graduating, he returned to Atlanta to open his Andrew T. Crawford Ironworks workshop and studio in 1993. The artist's goal is to create functional objects with an emphasis on blacksmithing. Some of Crawford's most prominent public works were created for Atlanta Botanical Garden, Federal Reserve Bank, and the District of Columbia. Crawford's works also are included among collections at several U.S. museums.

Bowling, who currently resides in Greenville, North Carolina, grew up on a small farm in Kentucky. His first sculptural efforts reflected the simple games of childhood: a fieldstone castle, a bridle of hay twine, and a driftwood armada. As a teenager, he lived in Belgium where he had access to the museums of Western Europe. Upon his return to the U.S., he attended the University of Kentucky where he received a bachelor of fine arts degree in sculpture and a bachelor's degree in art history. He currently is pursuing a master of fine arts degree in sculpture at East Carolina University.

Taking Flight by Jennifer Freeman

With Taking Flight, the artist is grounding the flight of the iron birds taking to the sky with the mosaic "story" in the base of the piece. When you observe the base closely, you will see that the geometrics closest to the bottom represent land, water, and flowers. As your eyes travel up the sculpture, the reds, golds, and yellows represent sunsets. As you reach the top of the piece, the blues, yellows, and greens represent the sky. Duluth resident Jennifer Freeman is a mosaic artist who began her career in the business world. She has a master of business administration degree from Northwestern University and owned and operated a successful travel agency for 20 years. She developed an interest in working with mosaics in 1998, studying in Italy. Freeman's public art pieces have been displayed in several Georgia cities as well as in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Capacious by Isaac Duncan III

Isaac Duncan III likes to create works of art that convey the feeling of motion, which implies life. Hence the sphere, angles, balanced and unbalanced elements, and voids that you see in Capacious. Duncan, a Brooklyn native, received his bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Notre Dame, certification in secondary art education from St. Mary's College, and a master of fine arts degree from the University of Kentucky.Duncan does not create a sketch or drawing before beginning to sculpt, preferring to create in the moment and make immediate decisions that lead him to the next set of circumstances, just as in life. Duncan's commissioned works are displayed across the United States as well as in Canada and Switzerland. He is president of the Mid-South Sculpture Alliance based in Chattanooga, where he lives.

Faith by Adam Walls

Adam Walls came up with the theme for this piece while trying to express his thoughts on science in concert with faith. He combined imagery loosely borrowed from the arched cathedral style of windows from the church he grew up in with imagery of a peptide bond, one of the scientific building blocks of life. The artist doesn't believe that it's necessary for the viewer to understand his concept since it is a personal one, but he hopes to leave his audience with a positive and enjoyable experience. The Herd by Phil Proctor

Phil Proctor's collection of eight steel-fabricated goats symbolizes the concept of awareness. All too often we find ourselves immersed in work, worry, or just the everyday tasks of life and our awareness of self and our place becomes clouded. One goat in Proctor's Herd raises his head to experience the beauty of his surroundings and, as he does, he sees all of the other goats with their heads buried, seeing only what is in front of their noses. For many years, Proctor has created sculptures that embody the concepts of energy and physical space. BRD by Michael Dillon

BRD is forged from iron using large industrial power hammers, the same hammers used during America's industrial age, to create forms and surfaces that translate the power and force of the forging process. Cow on a Horse by Jim Collins

Cow on a Horse is a visual pun and a continuation of artist Jim Collins' cattle series. The artist's largest collection of cows is Limerick Heard, created in 2004 by commission for major highways in Limerick, Ireland. Other examples of Collins' silhouette cows are on display in Bucks County, Pennsylvania; Athens, Georgia; and Chattanooga as well as in the hills of West Virginia.

Collins' work may best be exemplified by his long running Watcher series. Primarily a public art sculptor, his style is characterized by the use of silhouettes of people and animals constructed from stainless steel, aluminum, and other metals. Collins, who lives in Signal Mountain, Tennessee, was a professor of art at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga from 1966-83, when he left to devote himself full time to his career as a professional artist. Okonkwo lives in Fayetteville, Georgia, but was born in Eastern Nigeria. He was drawn to art even as a child, an inclination always encouraged by his mother. Okonkwo states: "Any glory or acclaim that ever comes to me as an artist, I will attribute directly to my mother and my wife, the two people who have stood by me and have never wavered in their encouragement and support for me as an artist."
