Grounds Maintenance
Public Works maintains city property, including City Hall, City of Suwanee parks, cemeteries, the Suwanee Creek Greenway, and certain right-of-ways. Maintenance activities include cutting grass, edging, graffiti removal, leaf removal, meeting room set-up, and trash collection.
Road and Sidewalk Maintenance
Public Works is responsible for maintenance of all roads within the city limits, except for Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road and Buford Highway, which are maintained by the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT), and McGinnis Ferry Road, Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, Satellite Boulevard, and Suwanee Dam Road, which are maintained by Gwinnett County DOT.
Each year, the city’s public works department performs a road improvement needs assessment analysis of city-maintained streets. The needs assessment takes into consideration pavement conditions and deficiencies, such as cracking, patching, and potholes, as well as traffic volume. The roads selected for improvement are determined based on need, available funding through the Georgia DOT’s Local Assistance Resurfacing Program, and available city funds. Public Works issues an annual contract for roadway patching and resurfacing services. Department personnel handle pothole and sidewalk repair.
Street Sign Installation
Public Works installs and maintains street signs on all roads on which it has maintenance responsibility. Prior to scheduling installation, the Public Works division will evaluate all requests for street signs for compliance with requirements set forth in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Please note that speed limits on city streets are set based on an engineering study and cannot be arbitrarily changed.
Snow and Ice Control
Though Suwanee typically enjoys a temperate Southern climate, occasionally the city does experience winter snow, sleet, freezing rain, or ice. When that happens, Public Works’ main goal is to keep roads clear for emergency vehicles and prevent accidents.
Each weather event is unique. Planning begins as weather approaches, and plans are adapted as conditions develop. The department works to return street access to normal as soon as possible. Initial efforts are focused on major roads and arteries. Temporary road closures may occur when conditions become too dangerous. Neighborhood streets are addressed as soon as possible, if conditions allow.
Stormwater Management
Stormwater refers to water generated by precipitation events, as well as water from washing cars, irrigation, pressure washing, commercial activities, and other sources. The city operates under its Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit and Stormwater Management Plan to maintain stormwater infrastructure, address illicit discharges, provide public education, and prevent pollution. Inspecting, testing, monitoring, repairing, and planning are just some of the activities that go into our comprehensive stormwater plan. More information is available on the Stormwater Management page.
Fleet Maintenance
Public Works personnel are responsible for performing preventive maintenance on the City's vehicles, including work vehicles and a variety of light and heavy equipment.
Litter Control
Public Works employees are assisted by community service workers in picking up trash along city right-of-ways.
